Monsoon season brings much needed rain to Tucson, along with lightning, high winds, flooding and power outages. A little preparation goes a long way toward protecting your home and everything plugged into it.
Protect against surges
Lightning strikes and utility switching can send surges through your wiring that damage electronics, appliances, AC systems and solar inverters. Plug-in surge strips help, but a whole-home surge protector installed at the panel adds a first line of defense for everything in the house.
Stay safe during outages
- Never run a portable generator indoors, in a garage or near windows
- Do not plug a generator into a wall outlet. Use a properly installed transfer switch or interlock
- Unplug sensitive electronics until power is stable again
- Stay far away from downed power lines and report them to your utility
Water and electricity
Outdoor outlets should be GFCI protected and have weather resistant covers. If water gets into an outlet, panel or equipment, leave it off until it has been checked.
After the storm
If you notice breakers that will not reset, flickering lights, a burning smell, or outlets and devices that stopped working after a storm, have the system inspected. Storm damage is not always visible.
