Many homes built from the 1950s through the 1980s were fitted with electrical panels that are now widely considered a concern. Two names come up most often: Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) and Zinsco. Plenty of Tucson homes from that era still have them.
Why these panels are a concern
A breaker’s job is to shut off power when a circuit is overloaded or shorted. Certain FPE Stab-Lok breakers and Zinsco panels have a reputation for breakers that may not trip when they should, and for connections that can loosen or overheat over time. Many home inspectors and insurance companies flag them for that reason.
How to tell what you have
- Look for “Federal Pacific,” “FPE” or “Stab-Lok” on the panel door or label
- Zinsco panels often have breakers in a mix of colors and may say “Zinsco” or “Sylvania”
- If you are not sure, take a photo of the panel and its label and send it to an electrician
What to do
If your home has one of these panels, it is worth having it evaluated by a licensed electrician. In most cases the recommendation is replacement, which is also a good time to upgrade capacity if your home needs it.
