Southern Arizona is one of the best places in the country for solar, which also means a lot of systems out there were installed quickly, and some installers are no longer around to support them. If your system is not producing like it used to, here is where to start.
Check the monitoring first
Many problems show up as a sudden drop in production or a monitoring app that stopped reporting. Sometimes the system is fine and the monitoring lost its internet connection. Sometimes it points to a real fault.
Common causes
- Inverter faults. Inverters are the most common point of failure. Error codes or warning lights usually mean it needs attention
- Tripped breakers or disconnects after a storm or surge
- Loose or damaged wiring, including connectors damaged by heat, wind or animals
- Dust and debris. Desert dust builds up between rains and cuts output
- An unfinished install that was never fully connected or inspected
Many fixes are simpler than you think
A lot of solar problems come down to a single connection, breaker or inverter issue, not the panels themselves. A careful diagnosis can save you from replacing equipment that still works.
