Lighting, fixtures and ceiling fans

Good lighting changes how a room feels, and a ceiling fan can make a Tucson summer a lot more bearable. Whether you are replacing a single fixture or relighting a whole house or storefront, it should be wired safely and look clean when it is done.

What we install

  • Recessed lighting in kitchens, living rooms and offices
  • Ceiling fans, including new fan boxes rated to carry the weight
  • Fixtures and pendants over islands, dining tables and entries
  • Dimmers, smart switches and multi-way switching
  • Under-cabinet and accent lighting
  • Outdoor and security lighting, including motion sensors and patio lighting
  • LED retrofits for homes and businesses

Done right the first time

A fan needs a box that can actually hold it. Recessed lights need the right housings for insulated ceilings. Older homes often need a new circuit or a little rewiring before new lighting goes in. Aaron checks all of it up front so there are no surprises later.

Questions

Lighting questions

Ask Aaron: 520-222-7993
Can you install recessed lighting, ceiling fans, or a dimmer?

Yes. Ceiling fans need a fan-rated box that can support the weight and movement. Recessed lights in insulated ceilings must be IC-rated. Dimmers should be matched to the bulbs, since LED fixtures need LED-compatible dimmers to avoid flicker or buzzing.

Can I add outlets, or USB outlets, where I need them?

Yes. New outlets can be added to an existing circuit if it has capacity, or on a new circuit for heavier use. USB outlets replace standard receptacles and are a simple upgrade. An electrician can run wiring inside walls or use surface-mounted options where opening walls is impractical.

What are GFCI and AFCI outlets/breakers, and where do I need them?

A GFCI detects tiny current leaks and shuts power off in a fraction of a second to prevent electrical shock. It is required in wet or damp areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, laundry areas, and outdoors. An AFCI detects dangerous arcing in wiring and cords to prevent fires, and is required in bedrooms and many other living areas under newer codes. Dual-function breakers provide both. Requirements depend on the code edition your area has adopted, and both types should be tested regularly using their test buttons.

Do I need a permit for this work?

Permits are usually required for new circuits, panel changes, service upgrades, EV chargers, generators, and additions. Simple like-for-like swaps of an outlet, switch, or light fixture often do not need one, but rules vary by city and county. Licensed electricians normally handle permits. Unpermitted work can cause problems with insurance claims and when selling a home.

How long will the job take, and will the power be off?

Simple jobs like a fixture, outlet, or dimmer can take an hour or two. A new circuit or charger may take a few hours to half a day. A panel upgrade often takes most of a day and needs power off for several hours, sometimes with utility coordination. A good electrician will tell you the expected outage in advance so you can plan around refrigerators, medical equipment, and work-from-home needs.

Can I do this myself, or do I need a pro?

Many homeowners safely replace a switch, outlet, or light fixture after turning off the breaker and confirming the power is off with a voltage tester. Panel work, new circuits, aluminum or old wiring, and anything you are unsure about should go to a licensed electrician. Some areas also restrict or require permits for homeowner electrical work, so check local rules first.
