What residential work looks like

Most home calls start with something small: a breaker that keeps tripping, a dead outlet, lights that dim when the AC kicks on. Others are bigger projects like a kitchen remodel, a new circuit for a shop, or a full rewire of an older house. Aaron handles both, and he treats the small jobs with the same care as the big ones.

Common home projects

  • New Builds – all new wiring and main panel systems in a ground-up build
  • Troubleshooting and repair for tripping breakers, flickering lights, warm outlets and dead circuits
  • Panel and service upgrades, including replacing older Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels
  • New circuits and subpanels for garages, shops, additions, hot tubs and appliances
  • Rewiring older homes, including two-prong, cloth-insulated and aluminum branch wiring
  • Remodel wiring, lighting, ceiling fans, outlets and switches
  • Safety upgrades like GFCI and AFCI protection, whole-home surge protection and hardwired smoke and CO detectors

Why Tucson homes are different

Summer pushes air conditioning hard for months, which puts real load on panels and wiring that were sized decades ago. Monsoon storms bring lightning and power surges. And a lot of central Tucson is older construction: adobe, block and straw bale homes where running new wire takes some planning. Aaron grew up here and is proficient with all of it.

How a job goes

You call or text and describe what is going on. Aaron asks a few questions, then comes out to look at it in person. You get an honest assessment and clear options, including the simplest fix that will actually solve the problem. When permits are required by the City of Tucson or Pima County, we pull them and schedule the inspection.

Local know-how

Questions

Residential electrical questions

Ask Aaron: 520-222-7993
Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A breaker trips to protect the wiring. The usual causes are an overloaded circuit (too many devices), a short circuit, or a ground fault (often from moisture or a damaged cord). Unplug everything on that circuit and reset the breaker. If it trips again right away with nothing plugged in, or it trips repeatedly, there is a wiring or breaker problem and you should call an electrician. Never swap in a larger breaker to stop the tripping, since that can let the wire overheat.

Is it safe to keep using an outlet that’s warm or discolored?

No. Warmth, browning, or scorch marks mean heat is building at the connection, usually from a loose wire, a worn outlet, or an overloaded circuit. Stop using it, unplug what is in it, turn off the breaker, and call an electrician. If you smell burning or see smoke or sparks, shut off power and call 911 if there is any sign of fire.

Why is an outlet or a whole room not working?

Start with two checks: press RESET on any GFCI outlet nearby (in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, or outdoors, since one can control others), and look in the panel for a tripped breaker. If both are fine, the cause is often a loose or failed connection in a wall box or outlet. That needs an electrician to trace safely.

Is aluminum wiring or a Federal Pacific/Zinsco panel a problem?

They can be. Aluminum branch wiring, common in some homes built in the 1960s and 1970s, can loosen and oxidize at connections and create fire risk. Approved repairs include special connectors or crimps, or rewiring. Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) and Zinsco panels have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip. If your home has either, have an electrician evaluate it and plan for replacement or repair.

Is my old two-prong wiring or knob-and-tube wiring safe? Do I need to rewire?

Two-prong (ungrounded) outlets are not automatically dangerous, but they lack a safety ground. Options include GFCI protection on those circuits or rewiring. Knob-and-tube wiring is more of a concern, particularly when it is covered by insulation, has been modified, or is overloaded by modern use. Insurers may also restrict coverage. An inspection will tell you if you need a partial or full rewire.

Do you work on older Tucson homes, like adobe or straw bale?

Yes. Aaron was born and raised in Tucson and has particular familiarity with the more electrically challenging older structures found in and around the city, such as adobe and straw bale, along with the best practices that come with the desert’s unique building needs.
