Off-grid power, wells and battery backup

Off-grid work is where Aaron is happiest. Battery banks, pump management, generators and alternative fuel systems are among his favorite challenges, and he works on properties all around the Tucson area that run partly or completely on their own power.

What we work on

  • Off-grid solar systems designed, installed, expanded and repaired
  • Battery backup for full off-grid living or to keep essentials running during outages
  • Well pumps and pump controls, including solar-powered pumping
  • Generators and transfer switches for backup charging and outages
  • Load planning so your system matches how you actually use power

Built for the desert

Heat is hard on batteries and electronics, dust gets into everything, and monsoon storms test every connection. A good off-grid system accounts for all of it: ventilation and placement for batteries, proper grounding and surge protection, and wiring that holds up for years.

If you are planning a new off-grid build, fixing a system that never worked right, or adding capacity to one you already have, Aaron will walk the property with you and lay out clear options.

Questions

Off-grid questions

Ask Aaron: 520-222-7993
Do you work on off-grid solar, well pumps and battery backup?

Yes, it’s a specialty. Off-grid living is a particular interest of Aaron’s, and we’re especially skilled with off-grid solar systems, wells, pumps and battery backup, including systems that run on alternative fuel.

Can I install a generator or transfer switch?

Yes, and a properly installed transfer switch or interlock is essential. It keeps generator power from feeding back into the utility lines, which can seriously injure or kill line workers. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet using a dual-male cord. Installations typically need a permit, and portable generators must run outdoors, well away from windows, because of carbon monoxide.

How do I know if I’m overloading a circuit?

Warning signs include repeated tripping, dimming lights, warm plugs or cords, buzzing, and heavy reliance on extension cords or power strips. As a rule, continuous loads should stay under about 80% of the breaker rating. For example, a 15-amp circuit is best kept to roughly 12 amps (about 1,400 watts) of steady use.

What does whole-home surge protection do, and is it worth it?

A whole-home surge protector installs at the panel and diverts voltage spikes from lightning, utility switching, and large appliances cycling on and off. It is generally worth it if you have expensive electronics and appliances. It reduces risk but cannot guarantee protection from a direct lightning strike, and it works best paired with plug-in surge protectors for sensitive devices.

Can you repair a solar system another contractor installed?

Yes. If a solar contractor left you high and dry, we know the ins and outs of these complex systems and can repair yours or figure out what you need to get it back on track. We also design new systems around how you actually use power.
