Questions

Commercial electrical questions

Ask Aaron: 520-222-7993
Can I add a circuit or a subpanel for a garage or addition?

Usually yes, if the main panel and service have enough capacity. A subpanel is common for garages, workshops, and additions. The job needs a load calculation, correct wire and breaker sizing, proper grounding, and typically a permit and inspection.

What does whole-home surge protection do, and is it worth it?

A whole-home surge protector installs at the panel and diverts voltage spikes from lightning, utility switching, and large appliances cycling on and off. It is generally worth it if you have expensive electronics and appliances. It reduces risk but cannot guarantee protection from a direct lightning strike, and it works best paired with plug-in surge protectors for sensitive devices.

Can I install a generator or transfer switch?

Yes, and a properly installed transfer switch or interlock is essential. It keeps generator power from feeding back into the utility lines, which can seriously injure or kill line workers. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet using a dual-male cord. Installations typically need a permit, and portable generators must run outdoors, well away from windows, because of carbon monoxide.

Do I need a permit for this work?

Permits are usually required for new circuits, panel changes, service upgrades, EV chargers, generators, and additions. Simple like-for-like swaps of an outlet, switch, or light fixture often do not need one, but rules vary by city and county. Licensed electricians normally handle permits. Unpermitted work can cause problems with insurance claims and when selling a home.

How much will this cost, and do you charge hourly or flat rate?

It depends on the job. Troubleshooting and small repairs are often billed hourly, sometimes with a service-call fee. Defined projects like installing a circuit, fixture, or charger are commonly quoted at a flat rate. Rates vary widely by region and complexity, so ask for a written estimate that lists labor, materials, and permit fees.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Light The Way Electrical is licensed, bonded and insured under Arizona ROC #359885. You can verify any Arizona contractor’s license with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors at roc.az.gov.

A reputable electrician should be licensed in your state or locality, carry liability insurance, and have workers’ compensation coverage for employees. Ask for their license number and verify it with the licensing board, and ask for a certificate of insurance. That protects you if something goes wrong on the job.
