Getting Your Tucson Home Ready for an EV Charger

A Level 2 charger can fill most electric vehicles overnight, compared to days on a standard outlet. Before you buy one, it helps to know what the installation will involve.

Level 1 vs Level 2

Level 1 uses a regular 120 volt outlet and adds only a few miles of range per hour. Level 2 uses a dedicated 240 volt circuit, similar to an electric dryer, and is what most people want for daily charging at home.

Can your panel handle it?

A Level 2 charger is a large, continuous load. The first step is checking whether your panel has the space and the capacity for a new circuit. Many homes do. Some older homes with 100 amp service may need a panel upgrade first, or a charger set to a lower output.

What affects the cost

  • Distance from the panel to where you park
  • Whether the panel has space and capacity
  • Running wire through finished walls, the attic or underground
  • Whether a permit and inspection are required

Before you buy a charger

Check what your vehicle can actually accept, and whether the charger can be hardwired or plugs into an outlet. Hardwired installs are often the cleaner and more reliable option for daily use.
